Hi, Carol,
My dad was a miner, too - as were his dad and five brothers. There was a time
in the late fifties when all of them were in the same pit - Baroney Colliery -
when there was a horrible accident. Thankfully all my family escaped; but dad
was one of the ones who bricked off the seam which had collapsed killing eight
men. Only bits were recovered to bury.
One of my uncles was a rescuer in the Knockshinoch disaster, where, by some
miracle, despite a massive collapse in the tunnel, all were rescued alive.
There was a movie "None but the brave" based on the events.

Mum was an auxiliary in a hospital, and later a worker in my local school
kitchen.
Dad died in 1964, when I was four.
Mum died in 2009.
