Good morning All.
Years ago I used to go to Colleges.
Only one college was good to me but the others were absolutely crap towards
helping the blind
One college called Abraham moss in manchester was a lousy college
I was on braille course for 12 months the corse in classes were ok but sighted
students just couldn't give a toss abut the blind and disabled they all run
around corridors like wild animlas .
never left doors open for us never helped us when lost in huge corridors .
This particular college was 4 storys high wow lots of steps to go up.
Guess why had to use stirs
all because sighted students couldn't give a toss and never helped us in lift
or walked us to lift
When I got out of taxi that was it I was on my own.
Had lots of getting lost all sighted students used to say to me
its up that way
Oh honestly i had to find my own way
Ridiculous isn't it?
I never trusted them lift because students just got off at certain floors wow
never knew where i was
always ended up asking what floor am I on.
nightmare believe me.
I had to use my knowlege and try and remember landmarks .
one day there was students all hanging on corridors drinks machine goodness
dread to think what would happen if i was just putting my hands out on walls
not bare thinking about.
You see i had mobility lessons from a guide dog instructor at that time
this is before i got IIvan
How ever, I was fine when no students on corridors had more time to tap with my
long cane then.
but when students all over the corridors wow really distracted me.
The canteen was my worst nightmare believe me.
I would go in like a bloody idiot tapping on chairs and table peoples legs and
guess what nobody battered an eye lid
just stared at me.
I took ages to find a seat but by that time dinner time nearly over only had
half and hour
so in the end wrote a complaint letter to the prnciple and got my freind to
type it on computer.
It did the trick because after meeting with principle he agreed we all got
support worker to take us in canteen for our lunches.
Crikey took all that time for them to wake up.
Ridiculous
hated it in that college.
lack of help in there
I got another course year later but in next building to that in arts and craft
wow they were lovely in there met me at car park when got out of my taxi took
me in to craft the craft lady May green was fantastic she got some one to sit
with me in sewing classes.
Loved it.
6 month course loved every minute of it in there.
Only on a monday but just from 9pm till 1pm including break for coffee and ea
and biscuits
That course finished after 6 months sad really. closed .
I loved it we made cussions out of materials made cane basket trays base on
bottom made teddy bears i loved stuffing them
made shoulder bags out of materials decorated them
lovely course
pity no craft courses any more infact looked in to it last year but only
sighted painting courses
no good
thought I would share that .
