Yo no lo probé, pero a lo mejor la candidata a versión 2.84 puede servir. 
Justamente creo que cambian el motor que usan para trabajar los pdf.

We're glad to announce that the 2nd Release Candidate binaries of 
Greenstone version 2.84 for Windows, GNU/Linux and at last Mac OS 
(Leopard) are now available for download from our snapshots page:
http://www.greenstone.org/snapshots
 
Note that the Mac release is for Intel machines and has only been tested 
on Leopard (Mac OS v10.5.8) so far.
 
While these release candidates have undergone more testing than the 
previous ones, they are still release candidates, so don't replace your 
existing Greenstone installations yet.

If anyone is interested in testing this out, please do report any 
problems or bugs encountered to the mailing list. Your observations will 
help us finalise the release for 2.84.
