[gps-talkusers] Re: state policy

Hello, Ann,
Well, at least we agree that the BN is very expensive. That means that
Rehab will think twice and want a lot of convincing before it will part with
the funds. I forgot to note it, but I think the BN costs about 6 thousand
dollars, is that about right?

Now, let's have a go at your alternative, the Visuaide Maestro PDA running
Trekker software and Trekker maps can act as a GPS. However, I could not
find what acts as a GPS receiver for that system. The price of the Maestro,
Trekker, and four maps for four states, costs $3794. Add to that about $200
for the receiver, and we have as good as $4000. As far as I can tell, there
is no keyboard except what is on those pushbuttons on the Maestro. Also,
there is no apparent way a Braille display can be connected. Even if it
could be connected, so many parts might be a little difficult to handle. Of
course, the Braille display would be necessary for Deaf-blind people.

Anyway, after all is said and done and the smoke cloud has cleared away,
that Visuaide thing is going to be right up there on the multi-thousand
dollar range with the BN. Not surprising at all, considering who owns
Visuaide.

Dis-information, mis-information, whatever you want to call it, I don't
think I am guilty.

Happy Valentine's Day

Hi all,

Dick, I call your post as I see it. The reason I call your post
disinformation is that you do not mention any of the options for GPS
for the blind except the BrailleNote.

The BrailleNote does indeed have the best system, but one must have
the BN before you can use the tehcnology. This makes it expensive.

There is a combination of PDA and GPS by Visuaid, now part of
Humanware, that costs considerably less than the BN's option. In
addition, Freedom Scientific is attempting to meld off-the-shelf
GPS technology with the PacMate. This option may become viable.
There are differences in prices and in quality between all these
systems.

My advice to you is to do some more reading about the subject, then
post your opinion. Posting an opinion without full knowledge can
often lead to the giving out of disinformation. Disinformation is
information that is almost accurate but not quite, having just enough
truth in it to make it believable; unlike misinformation which is data
which is totally wrong. The problem with disinformation is that
because it's almost completely true, it can lead to misunderstandings
and wrong decision making. In fact, it is more dangerous than
misinformation for these very reasons.

I am not saying this to flame you, but only to caution you not to give
out information until you are sure your information is as accurate as
it can be.
