[gps-talkusers] Re: speaking passing cross streets.

Hi,

Just like to add my support for this as I, too, primarily use the GPS in bus travel and without speech; an excellent idea!

thanks Mike,
I understand the dillemmas when something is suggested by one user.
Therefore maybe others can jump in here.
What I'm suggesting is a user selectable mode that can be used in vehicles
that will just tell you street names as you get close or pass them.
You don't need the name of the street your on repeated over and over, and in
a bus when you are waiting for your street, you don't really need to know
"right or left, you just need the street name. So I'm suggesting a setting
that overrides the speed related change in announcements, plus more control
over the verbosity.
By the way, Since I use my GPS on a PK, this brief announce mode would be
ideal for braille. I often run with speech off when in a car or bus.
Thanks for listening Mike.

Doug,

Not sure why you think we have strongly resisted an announcement of the
cross street only. This is the first request to my knowledge for that
feature. We add these requests to our database and prioritize them based
upon the number of user requests and the difficulty of implementing the
feature.

I personally think this is an excellent idea.

Pardon me but on this issue I have to disagree stongly with Mike May. I
use the sendero system everyday. I also have owned a Trekker for many
years.
Although you can't do things like plan a route with Trekker in vehicle
mode, you can hear every street name as you travel on a bus or by car.
It speaks it quickly and succinctly. My most serious complaint with the
Sendero GPS system is the lack of verbosity settings. For example, if
there were a "quick speak mode for intersections, you just need to hear
the street your crossing, not the street your on. For some reason this
has been resisted by the company. I believe it could be a terrific aid
for people trying to identify upcoming streets as you travel by bus.
That My two cents.
