Carl has discovered a Bluetooth speaker you may want to consider for use with
the BrailleNote via the Bluetooth audio adapter we have talked about.
It is the Motorola, HF820. It is intended to be a handsfree speaker for the
cell phone in the car. It works great for that purpose but also as simply a
loud speaker for the BrailleNote.
It is about 2 by 3 inches in size and looks like a small cell phone. It comes
with a plastic clip so you can clip it to the BrailleNote strap on top of your
shoulder.
It can get pretty loud but ht audio is tinny but intelligible. The small size
and Bluetooth connection make it better than wired speakers.
I haven't read the manual yet so I don't know if there is a way to lock the
speaker so it won't turn on accidentally. The push button for power makes it
easy to switch on and the same button controls volume. You do have to charge it
which you don't have to worry about with the Radio Shack speaker. It shuts off
after a couple minutes to save battery life and comes back on immediately when
it gets an audio signal.
The cost was around $60 for the HF820 plus the cost of the Bluetooth adapter
for the BrailleNote.
If you have this speaker and a Bluetooth earphone, you can only pair one at a
time with the audio adapter.
I am not personally a fan of an external speaker but for those of you who are,
I am thrilled that there is finally a Bluetooth option.
Note, Carl has another unit which sounds better but is twice the size of the
HF820. I don't think it would ride on your shoulder so nicely.
