[gps-talkusers] Re: safety while using GPS

If you have (or would have) good hearing aids, especially digital hearing
aids (which will not whistle when covered), then good, must-be-comfortable,
over-the-ear Walkman
stereo headphones they do not much mask the other sounds compared with what
you normally hear with these digitals. And you also thereby
have
a nice base sound in which you hear your brailleNote or VoiceNote or
whatever unit relating the GPS information to you as you want it .

I too would hesitate to wearing headphones, even if they are the smaller
earbuds while traveling. For our Voice Sense testing, I've simply wore
the Voice Sense hanging from the shoulder strap. It's either in front of
my on my chest or on my side. Using the one-handed commands is enough
for me to get most of the information I need. If things require two
hands, then it's enough that I won't be walking in the first place to do
that, such as searching for intersections, pois, or addresses.

I sort of attribute this behavior to how a sighted driver would not need
to be on the phone while driving, sure many do it, and sure, mahy are
safe, but it's been a proven fact that the attention span of a driver
drops more than 20% while they are holding a phone to their ear while
driving.
