[gps-talkusers] Re: luetooth receiver not detected?

Gavin,

Well, from doing a google search on the Globalsat
bt338, I think I know why the bluetooth reciever appears to be dropping at
pedestrian speeds and doing just fine at vehicular speeds.

Since the receiver is using the SirfstarIII chipset which is a chipset that
is very sensative, the receiver will pick up signals that are bouncing off
of walls, from buildings in urban areas, but also indoors. Although this
seems like a good idea, the downside of this is that heading information may
be throw off due to multi-path (you may be heading north, but since the
receiver is picking up faulty signals, it may report that you are heading
south). Also, with the SirfstarIII chipset you may experience what is known
as "drift" with this you may be standing in one location for a few minutes,
but if you check the pedometer with the b command, it may report that you
have gone a quarter of a mile, but in reality you haven't moved a foot.

Sirfstar had a resolution for the multi-path issue and the drift issue that
chipset was experiencing. Their resolution was to enable "static
navigation," this is a feature of the chipset that will freeze your
position when moving slower than 2.5 mph or 4 kmh. that freezes your
position when you are moving slower than 4 km/h . Position changes will only
be registered when the difference exceeds 165 feet or 50 meters. As
a result when you walk slowly your position seems to be frozen and it
updates only every once in a while.

The reciever appears to be freezing when at pedestrian speeds resulting in
the gps program no longer detecting the receiver, thus you getting the
message "bluetooth receiver not detected. press v for virtual"

I hope this answers your question. The above was taken from:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/bt338.php

I took the information from the website and summarized it as I thoght the
article was quite lenghty and there were portions that didn't pertain to the
issue you were experiencing.

It also appears that their latest batch are being shipped with the "static
navigation" turned off, so the receiver won't freeze at speeds below 2.5 mph
or 4 kmh.

If you are looking for a receiver I would recommend the Holux GPSlim236, I
would recommend purchasing it from Sendero Group as they have worked with
the manufactures to have the best settings configured to work with the
Sendero GPS. If you purchase the reciever from Sendero they have all of
their receivers enabled with waas by default.

Kevin

good thing
