[gps-talkusers] Re: interpreting mobile geo INFORMATION

Thank you Steve. That was a very helpful bit of advice. I, unfortunately,
cannot walk very far in my area because after my first turn, I am on a major
road which has no sidewalks. But, I will get hubbby to go with me to a near
by neighborhood and take a walk with me there. Thus, he can verify the
street names and any other info that Geo is telling me. I appreciate your
response.

Lyn

Take yourself for a walk. Forget the manual and just walk. You will find
that the information you get will make more sense once you have a direction
established.

You don't need to know all the command - you will pretty quickly learn the
ones that are important to you and forget the rest.

I have been using Sendero on a Braillenote for about three years and
wouldn't feel happy going into a strange area on my own without it. The only
commands I use regularly are those that tell me the street I am on and the
street names of the next intersection. Occasionally I check my heading and I
will vary what look around tells me depending upon the type of trip I am on.

Don't over-burden yourself with the manuals. Let experience tell you what
you need.

OK, I was told by Kevin that this was the place to go to try to get an
understanding of what all this information that geo gives me means. I am
sitting at my desk, trying to learn this stuff. I have the receiver in my
window, which faces west. I don't know if that makes any difference or not,
but just giving you all the info I can. If I go out of my front door, also
facing west, I could turn left (which would be south) to go up to a street
called Ponce de LEON ave., which runs east and west. My street dead ends in
to it. If I turn right (which would be north) out of my front door, I
would go to a stree called north st., which only turns right. to the left
is a dead end. So, knowing that, can someone tell me what this stuff means.
here is what mobile Geo tels me when I look through the different things on
the screen:

It gives my position, which is off by about 30 street nubmers. It is
presently running at good quality, 31 feet, tracking 5 satellites.

plus; nearest intersection 635 feet, behind slight right to east ponce de
leon ave.; behind andahead.

This makes no sense to me at all. While typing this, it said a number of
different things. Once, it said left to ponce, then it said behind. It
keeps saying different things. If I am somewhre I am not familiar with, how
will I know which to believe?

northwest ant 1 miles per hour.
What is the northwest referring to?

The rest of the stuf on there, I can figure out.
Thanks, Lynn
