Hi all: Since I use a gps with my cane and am a certified teacher of the blind in new york, i am curious to know what sendero group sessions focused about when presenting at the nfb convention, the acb convention and most recently the aer international conference. For all members on this list aer is anortanizationfor professionals in ahl the fields of blindness which include certified teachersof the blind and visually impaired, certified orientation and mobility specialists and certified low vision therappists formerlyy known as certified rehabilitation low vision teachers. Aer refers to the "Association for hte Education and rehabilition of the blind and visually impaired and is a member organization for any professionals in the above blindness field. To be quite frank, I chose to become a certified teacherof the blind and visually im[aired in new york since I wasn't happy with the vocational rehabilitation services from my state commission for the blind and visually impaired who provided both orientation and mobility and rehabilitation training for only 12 weeks .Certified Teachers of the blind and visually impaired teach blind and visually impaired students from age 5-21 continuously throughout each school year. I Certified orientation and mobility specilaists who are lucky to teach in thepublic school system also teach blind and visually impaired students essential orientation and mobility skills to students who are blind and visually impaired from age 5-21 and teach the skills on a continuous basis throughout each fiscal school year. I couldn't see myself going the regorous masters degree to become a certified low vision therapist formerly teacher and teach a particular client whether a child, teen ager or adult whose blind for only 12 weeks. It would be great if people like myself would be open to sharing with me their vr experiences since I am interested in knowing the amount of oreitation and rehab traning adults are provided from all states of the U.s. You may write to me offlist at: sararooz@xxxxxxxxx I also feel that orientation and mobility specialists should be given the training to teach a student who decides to consider a gps or clclient who decides to consider a gps system the necessary training to teach the student or client how to use the the gps device chooses to learn. Currently, to my knowledge, not many certified orientation and mobility specialists have received such training in this area. I have been personally approached by my former certified orientation and mobility specialist who taught me in the upper elementary grades and in high school how this person can get training how to teach gps to students who are blind and visually impaired. i've volunteered to show this professional how I use my gps device and how i learnt my device. I wonderhow this issue can be addressed though on a national basis.
