[gps-talkusers] Re: for intrepid travelers only

Hello, Mike,
If you guys just happen to choose Japan, I live there, so could meet you all and keep someone from falling into a roadside ditch or a grating or something. I am sure that I could find other ways to be useful. Haha.

Happy trekking. Just be aware that properly formatted gps maps do not exist for Japan and quite a few other foreign countries. Your GPS receivers would work just fine over here, but just no POIs.

The Japanese have GPS for cars, and it is as good or better than anything you are apt to find in the US. However, of course, the formatting is different.

I have been contemplating a travel idea, potentially to be our Way Fun 2006 trip or perhaps in addition to it. In theory, who would partake of the following crazy idea?

Each Tuesday morning, United Airlines posts last minute super deals. Some are domestic and some are international. They are from major airports like San Francisco, Chicago and New York. They offer deals like $318 round trip San Francisco Paris or to Japan round trip for $500.

There are catches of course. You have to book the trip within the following week to travel immediately thereafter. You can stay 7 to 10 days.

My idea is to pick specific travel dates well in advance but leave the destination and final plans open until the prior Tuesday to departure. On that particular Tuesday, we would all read the United email and then get on a conference call early that same morning and pick a destination based upon the deals of the week. We would then have a few follow up conference calls and emails to establish accommodations.

Wouldn't the anticipation be great as well as the last minute scramble to sort out the travel details? It would be our own mini version of the Amazing Race. The price would be great too.

The down side might be that the special fares are taken up from one airport and not another or maybe not all destinations would have a deal from all the major cities in the U.S. We could study the weekly United announcements to become educated about this. I don't anticipate that a large group would or could participate in this adventure but I bet 10 or 12 people might.

Who would be theoretically game for this?
