Hi, well, there is the plex-talk and some other smaller less
expensive portable CD players available from RFB and elsewhere.
If you are a client of the Commission for the Blind or of the
Department of Rehab, you could hit them up for one of those.

thanks lots for your explaination.
Is their such a thing as a portable cd drive? I have daisy
formatted bbooks
for school. It would be nice to have something so I am not
stuck at the
computer. The books are both text and audio files so my daisy
player won't
play them. Can the braille note play them?
Thanks lots from a technically chalenged woman.
Rita

No, thumb drive are solid state mass storage memory devices.
They have
relatively small memories so far, maybe around four or eight
gigs. A
pocket hard drive is a hard disk which stores information on a
moving disk
magnetically. You can feel it vibrate when you power it up.
They hold
much more information, from around 60 gig's to 250 or maybe 512
gigabytes.

Are pocket hard drives and thumb drives the same thing?

Right you are. I also don't think the access time would be very
good.
You'd also have to unzip your maps, well, no, you could use the
Bks
extention and unzip them to your CF or SD card but why bother
when you
could just store them on the external hard disk already unzipped
in
separate folders for the state, province, or country. Also,
remember
that every card or USB device you have plugged in will shorten
your
battery run time before you have to recharge the unit. I
consolidated
the dictionary and GPS 4.0 on one CF card and it works great
with room
to spare for a few extra maps in an unused maps folder.

One thing for some to bear in mind when looking at hard drives
for storing
maps.
Whilst temporary storage on a hard drive is fine; for most
people, it is
not practical to actually use those hard-drive-based maps unless
they are
further copied to an SD or CF card. This is because, obviously,
a hard
drive needs to be plugged into the BN and will protrude a
significant amount
from the case thereby making it a potential accident waiting to
happen when
you're walking around.
Thought it worth mentioning in case overlooked!

Hello,
The Western Digital drives usually work well with the Bn.
I have a very lightweight drive from Western Digital which is a
250 gb
drive, and it works just fine.
Hth,

I've thought about getting a pocket hard drive to use for
transferring maps or other large files to my BN. Does anyone
have
experience with which brands or models of these work with the
BN's usb
port?
Peter
