Yes Mary there is such a thing as a bad receiver and I would look into swapping your out. 

and to answer the following:
Speaking of holex 1000 receivers. When I start my GPS, it takes maybe up to about 6 minnits to connect to the satellites. The receiver sliped out of my hand, and fell in it's case to the wooden dinning room floor. Nothing rattles, but is their a chance of damage. How would I know, diagnose, or fix it? Maybe something in the holex software?
Sounds to me like this is now a damaged receiver because my Holux m-1000 takes 10-20 seconds to acquire satellites and that is inside my house!

I couldn't agree with you more, this is why the M-1000 has been such a disappointment. I guess there's such a thing as a bad receiver. I can only go by what my experience has been, just like the magellan Sportrak, I had the same difficulties with it, and yet everybody else loved it.
