Hi all,
Um, maybe folks in foreign countries think that we're ill-mannered
cowboys because sometimes we are. We don't speak any language,
usually, except English. We tend in the general, to want hotels that
look the same as at home. Some of us allow our kids to behave in the
same hooliganish way that they do at home. Sometimes some of us
become loud and beligerant in restaurants. Moreover, we, in general,
tend to feel that American values, American products, American social
mores, American money are the best thing since sliced bread. Part of
the reason why many people who live in a variety of countries all over
the world think that Americans are rich and they hate us. Yes, Joe,
they hate us because they see us as rich and spoiled and unmindful of
other people's cultures.
Take this as an example. I was walking on a street in
Munich one day with my friend. I was there on tour with my chorus. I
was minding my own business. All of a sudden from across the street
comes this young, American voice that shouted, "Hey, look at the blind
lady!"
I chose to ignore the punk kid, but I wanted in the worst way to turn
around and yell back, "Hey, look at the ugly American. Go back to
where you came from until you can learn to behave properly in somebody
else's country!"
No, Joe, we are *not* good people sometimes, and we do not always know
the best way to do things. We think our religious beliefs are better
than those of others. We think that because we are able to give help
to others, that makes us special in some way.
I'm sorry that Mike was denied entrance to a restaurant in Denmark,
and I agree that people with guide dogs should be allowed to go
whereever they want to go. It's a shame that they do not have laws
about service animals. This may be one thing where we've got better
legislation than Denmark. I'd be interested in knowing what progress
the Danish associations of the blind are making in this area in their
country. If they have guide dogs, it would seem as if they would want
this kind of legislation so that they could be protected under their
own laws.
