[gps-talkusers] Re: answering multiple questions

Hi,

There is a lot to learn with the GPS and it will take time.

I got mine in March and used it in the car at first.

That is I turned on the gps, placed the receiver in on the dashboard and practiced the various commands such as

h or dot 2: tells you which way you are heading

dot 1 or a: gives you the address you are near.
letter s: tells you the speed the car is travellling
c tells you the cityy you are in
space c: tells you details about the area
and so on.

I studied a braile list of the commands that came with the device and practiced a few at a time.

I found some addresses of some new places we were looking for, restrants and the such down in Florida. It was helpful for my husband because I could help him in new areas. Traffic is bad in Florida and a gps is a big help.

I started walking around on rather easy routes at first and located businesses and streets.

I set a point of interest at the turn I had to make so I knew what driveway to go in to find the building we were staying in. Space dot 3 records a POI. You have to be at the spot you want to be at in order to record the turn.
Virtual mode is very helpful. It takes a while to think in terms of a map but I found out that if you find you are going straight lets say north on a particular street and you want to go south instead you have to turn twice. This puts you going south on that street.

To set the address press space with s here you enter the state such as Michigan
hit enter.
Then y you enter city
such as Detroit, then hit enter
then it says enter street name: put in the name of the street and hit enter.

Then it says enter number: enter the house number and press enter.

If you want this to be the point of interest hit the letter P.

This can be changed anytime.

If you hit letter a it will tell the address y you are near.
Hope this helps. I am still learning myself.

I then started using it more places. I was real relunctant about using it with my dog but it works fine even though my dog works on the left.
You may want to try your gps in the car at first or a bus. It takes practice.

I use it on the bus but I plan my trip ahead of time when I am alone so I am sure I know the address of the business I am going to and so forth.

I over looked the sub directories. *grin* I've read the manual twice,
along with commands summary and listened to your tutorial, but I'm still
lost. I can't seemed to memorize all of the commands and I'm having
trouble in virtual mode just trying to look around. I also am trying to
figure out how to set my address as POI by using the s cord. I also want
to know how you do the cord commands and others while using a dog.

You all should have noticed that I did not suggest that anyone do something as logical as reading the user's manual, only the tutorial. Read the manual, what a thought!

The Earthmate receiver can go directly on the cradle but that is not
the way most BrailleNote GPS users would configure it. We ship the
Earthmate serial unit already connected. This means you have the
receiver with a 3 foot extension cable to the battery cradle and then
a 1-foot cable from the cradle to the BrailleNote.

I think we will avoid the sub directories on the compact flash card
for the documentation. Although this is the most logical way to
organize the documents, it is quite common for people to overlook the
sub directories.

Mike
