I can't imagine how the cable is related to the battery pack, unless
perhaps it's a USB cable and is meant to allow you to charge the battery
pack (since USB contains power lines). Otherwise, it's just some
freebie they're giving away in hope that folks who can't use the
EarthMate in all situations because some devices don't have a USB
interface, will consider that they also have this serial option they may
not have known about. Since a serial interface is actually part of the
NMEA specification, and not USB, there's a lot of equipment out there
(especially marine equipment) which only has serial interfaces.
Enough of my rambling, maybe I misunderstood you and you know exactly
what the cable is used for?

with a serial connector.
