Situation 4
I am told by a fishing company to meet the guide at the Wagon Wheel
Restaurant at the junction of highways 140 and 62 near Klamath Falls, OR. I
don't find Wagon Wheel in the POI database. I don't find Wagon by itself.
I call information and no Wagon Wheel Restaurant is listed in Oregon. I
call the fishing guide on his cell. It is Sunday night and he doesn't answer.
Question 4: How do I find the fishing guide?
Answer 4:
I know that the meeting place is a 30-minute drive so I do a search of all
POIs within 30 miles. I find something called the Water Wheel Campground.
It is on Highway 97, which does connect to Highway 6 2. There isn't a
Highway 140 nearby as specified by the fishing company.
I set the campground as my virtual position and explored along Highway 97
and found Highway 62. I also found a Riverbend restaurant nearby. I set
this as my destination with Chord D and calculated a route with RV. It
totaled 27 miles and went the approximate direction I had been instructed
by the less than reliable fishing company receptionist.
I did reach the fishing guide in the morning and he wasn't much more
helpful. The route did get us to the meeting place.
In the process of solving this problem, I also learned the following about
state highways.
The highways around Southern Oregon wind through small towns and change
names multiple times. It can be tricky entering an address on one of these
roads like the Crater Lake Highway which is Oregon 62. In a POI address,
you might see it as HWY 62, using the abbreviation for Highway and the
number 62. However, in the map Address database, the state highways usually
have the two-letter state code, a dash and the number of the highway. For
example, OR-62
If I want to find a state highway and its intersection, I could do an
Address match using the state code followed by a dash
Then, all state highways would come up. I could select one and look at the
intersecting street list. Set that as a virtual position and then see if
something familiar is in the vicinity.
