Situation 10
We headed out on a Saturday evening to hear a concert by the Voices of
Peace about 45 miles from home. We wanted to find a new place to have
dinner along the way and we had to be efficient about our travel because it
was raining hard and we didn't want to be late for the concert. In other
words, no time to meander or get lost.
Question 10: How do we explore the POI database to see what is between home
and our destination without sorting through thousands of points manually?
Answer 10:
First, I set our destination by entering the address in the appropriate
fields. Second, I set my home as the Virtual starting point and switch to
virtual mode.
Third, I pressed RV to calculate a vehicular route.
Now to the part where I explored POIs along the way. I pressed Chord T a
few times to move along the route beyond my home town and familiar
territory. In fact, I figured we should get fairly close to the destination
before stopping for dinner so we were certain of how much time we needed to
finish the travel after eating. At key turning points where we transitioned
highways, I decided to see what POIs were nearby. I did this by pressing
Chord V after the Chord T to set that turning point as my
virtual position. Since I was in Virtual mode already, I then pressed
Chord F, set my search distance range and selected the restaurant category.
I was then presented with a list of restaurants in the database within that
range. I then repeated this procedure to explore other areas along the route.
I reviewed the POIs before we left the house to have an idea of which off
ramp would have the most options. When we were actually in that vicinity, I
announced the possibilities to my family and we had a heated debate as to,
which was the best choice. I suppose I could have censored the information
to favor my preference but I didn't. Since it was rainy, it was hard for
them to see the restaurants in time to pull off the road so it was handy to
make our choice ahead of the location. Since we were making our boys go to
a concert, not of their choosing, I let them pick the restaurant and we
ended up at Mel's Diner.
In conclusion, the trip was efficient, the food was passable and the
concert was fantastic. Just remember, Set Virtual Starting position, Set
Destination, press RV, press Chord T for a Turning Point, Chord V to set it
is a virtual position and finally F chord to search for nearby restaurants.
Best not to take advantage of those sighted folks by screening the
information. Remember the saying, turn about is fair play.
