[gps-talkusers] Situation 1, finding major highway

Situation 1:

I am flying from Portland Oregon to Sacramento California. There are
interesting places and towns over which I am flying. Most are places I have
never heard of and I want a perspective relative to a major freeway that I
am familiar with like Interstate 5.

Question 1: How do I find a major freeway if I am not directly over it?

Answer 1:
I press Chord F, Advance find for Points of Interest and press Enter to
begin the search from my current flying location.
I enter 30 miles as the ending distance of the search and press Enter.
I choose Exit as the category and press Enter.
I press Enter again to search for all highway exits within 30 miles.
If none come up, I answer Y for Yes to the prompt, "do you want to expand
the search to 60 miles.

Not all major highway exits are in the database but a lot are. Once I hear
where the exit is located, I can set it as my virtual position with a Chord
V in order to explore whatever points or exits are in that area. Mostly, I
will pay attention to which direction that exit is from my flying position.
In this way, I can paint a mental image of where I am relative to the freeway.

In my situation, we were flying about 40 miles East of Interstate 5 in the
same direction.

If there weren't any highway exits, I could search similarly for a city
either in the city category or in the "all" category and expecting it to
come up as part of a Point of Interest address.
