[gps-talkusers] Re: Sendero & Laptops

Andy, there is also the HTC shift. While I'm not sure about XP I do know it
comes with vista installed. (I believe it'spossible to rip out vista and back
install XP pro but I have not done this my self and don't own one) One of the
upsides of the shift is it comes with a cellular facility so your phone and
data happen in the same device. Nice idea although this whole class of devices
seems under powered for a full blown version of winders.
I have to say, the idea of running the GPS package with all that other
overhead on a laptop really turns me off on a lot of levels. Just a few
problems I can think of off hand are battery life, heat distribution, size and
weight, ease of use (I don't want to have to take it out of my bag each time),
cost, and reliability. (you know, none of the biggies) As someone who uses a
laptop daily and travels with one daily as part of my gig I'd really have to
fight with the thing while traveling and I wouldn't dare turn it on in my bag
and try to function with it remotely because it would melt.

I don't know about $400, but there is a class of handheld Windows PC's called
UMPC. They have a small display, and, what is called a "thumb" keyboard. Two
brands are Samsung and Oqo. They typically have a 1 GB processor and a 40 GB
HD, and run Windows XP. You can run a screen reader and screen magnifier on
these babies, but they cost a lot more than $400.

One of the more intriguing things I saw at the Acb convention was a very
small laptop running System Access software. This device was about half the
width of a normal laptop, was light weight, & cost approximately $400.

Perhaps it is time again for Sendero to consider a version for laptops.
