Charles,

That's the best description of how the gps receivers locate satellite signals 
I've heard, and really explains why you can get a quick position fix in some 
situations 
but not in others.  

This is definitely an explanation I'll save to reference in the future. 

Also you guys might really want to consider putting this into the gps manual 
somewhere as there are probably a lot of folks out there who could benefit from 
this 
but who aren't on the net or list to see it.
