You are absolutely right, there actually is a tiny little on-off switch on the bottom of the battery pack, on the right side. I have never used the battery pack with its serial connector cable, so had no idea.

I was confused too when I first got my Earthmate. The on/off switch is on the battery pack, which goes inside the accessory pouch.
