I would speculate that the inability to port Sendero GPS to the PAC Mate
was more of an FS decision rather than that of Sendero's. Maybe Mike
would care to comment on this?
Anyhow, happy installation if you haven't already installed StreetTalk!

Hi, thanks for the review or StreetTalk, I am a Pacmate QX420 user, and
I do agree with you in a major way regarding the size of the PM compared
to the BN. I have seen the Sendero GPS solution in action and I do feel
it is by far more user friendly and intuitive to operate, but at the
same time, Sendero has made it clear, at least at this time, that they
won't be porting their GPS solution over to the PM. So I did go ahead
and order StreetTalk. I think as a new user it will be okay, and as
time moves on, hopefully, FS will update the product to include some of
the feature that are now standard with Sendero's GPS solution.
Thanks again,
Gene and Princess

Hi Gene and Princess,
I've used both StreetTalk and Sendero solutions and it's my opinion that
Sendero's solution is by far more user friendly and feature rich. But,
one would have to expect this since the Sendero product has been out for
several years while StreetTalk is less than a year old, although it's
underlying Destinator component has been on the market for longer. There
are certainly some favorable features of StreetTalk such as creating
Favorites which are similar to POI's but collected separately in a
Favorites list, but there are many many issues with the product with
regards to performance and the user interface that make it clumsy to use
by comparison. For example, loading StreeTalk into memory can take a
couple of minutes and you always need to press the "I agree" button in
order to begin using the software. It is also advisable to unload all
other programs. So, it can literally take 3 to 4 minutes in addition to
the time to acquire a fix just to get to the GPS planning screen
(equivalent more or less to that of Virtual mode in Sendero's
product). In a pinch you can load the Calendar or Contacts program
but
you want to shut it down once you've found the information you were
looking for in order to resume using StreetTalk or the PAC Mate becomes
noticeably sluggish. Starting the GPS program on the BrailleNote is a
snap as long as there isn't problems with losing pairing with the
receiver. I have had less issues with losing pairing with the PAC Mate
than those experiences I've read about on this list although it was
admittedly a bitch to pair for the first time on the PAC Mate (see my
installation note below).
Calculating a route can also take a long time with StreetTalk, even just
issuing the create route command (Control R). One of the biggest
problems I have with StreetTalk is that it regularly gets fowled up when
I've reached my destination. It seems that a "you've arrived" dialog of
sorts pops up that isn't properly read and you have to quit the program
and sometimes even reset the unit in order to get on with things.
Another aspect to consider is the hardware. The PAC Mate is
considerably larger and heavier than the BrailleNotes, especially the
qwerty version. This is more of a concern as a pedestrian.
It can take a couple of hours to install the StreetTalk/Destinator
software and register it for the first time. I think I can do it now in
about an hour whereas I can load Sendero GPS with maps generally under
10 minutes. Finally, one has to point out that Freedom Scientific has
yet to release any updates to StreetTalk whereas Sendero has regularly
done so throughout the past few years. Admittedly, no product is or will
be perfect but I don't think you'll be terribly disappointed, if at all,
with Sendero GPS.

Hi Mike, I asked the question about accuracy because I have never heard
a review of the StreetTalk solution which made me want to go out and buy
it. I have talked to a few of the people at FS who made it happen, and
I know they have a lot of pride in the product, but as I said before,
the reviews don't make me feel real good about the product. I have
asked for a live demo and hopefully that will happen soon, and then I
can make an informed decision based on tangable, real time, information.
I have also come away from the audio demos feeling like StreetTalk is
more cumbersome or complex to use than Sendero's GPS solution, but if I
am wrong about this, anyone on the list who has used both products,
please set me straight. Again, this is where a live demo would set my
mind at ease.

Gene,
The x key tells you the street you are on and the intersecting street
plus which side it is on. The Chord X gives all that plus the
orientation of the streets.
BrailleNote GPS is the dominant topic on this list but discussion of
other units is welcome. Some listers have both.
In terms of accuracy of GPS, all the systems have the same basic
constraints of the GPS system. The maps vary a bit but one system may
have a missing street in one town and the other system in a different
town.
The major differences are in the user interfaces.
