If it were always that easy. Often a bus trip may require one or more
transfers and it would be nice to map the route to know where to make the
transfer. Many times the driver or, in the case of rapid transit, other
passengers are not going to tell you. In the 50 mile trip I referred to,
the trip was across 3 counties and involved, ultimately, the use of a cab, a
bus route, a rapid transit system with one transfer, and finally a second
bus route on a different transit system. My expressed wish was that one
could chain these together in a transit route as we do with vehicular or
pedestrian routs. As Mike said, as more transit systems use and share
geocoding, this will be possible. Also as Mike said, this will become a
benefit for sighted as well as visually impaired. I will also add that
being able to use the GPS system along the route greatly broadens our
understanding of what is around us while we are making the trip.

As a suggestion, you could call the bus company and ask them what the route
is. Then, on your map, you could mark a route in advance from where you
start to where you end. Thinking about it a little differently, I do not
pay much attention to the points in between, only where I get on and off,
leaving the minor problem of getting there to the driver once I have found
the proper bus.

Hi Mike:
This falls under the category "it would be nice". I was trying to figure
out how to get from one town to another that is about 50 miles apart. Since
it is too far to walk and I do not have access to someone who could drive me
there, I was trying to figure out what public transit would be available.
Since we list a lot of bus stops, train stations, etc. in our pois, I was
wondering if there could be a way to set a route for public transit as a
third option to vehicle and pedestrian? Is this even technically feasible?
The application could be used for buses, trains, rapid transit, and any
other fixed route ground systems we might have.
