[gps-talkusers] Re: New York City and mass transit

Eric,

I would suggest checking maps.google.com as there are a few different modes
for making a route, such as public transportation, car or by foot.

As far as obtaining a GPS fix. Your best bet is to stand in a relatively
open area with a semi-good view of the sky and just wait until Sense Nav
reports satellite information. It is easier to obtain a GPS fix when
stationary as oppose to walking or moving at even higher speeds.

The Urban Canyon setting found in the Sendero GPS for the BrailleNote does
not effect the time it takes to obtain a GPS fix. However, it will effect
the averaging of ones heading, which in most cases will reduce bouncing
headings.

In cases where multi-path is an issue, it is better to focus on the distance
decreasing, which is known as the getting warmer method. This is a much more
reliable reading than the heading.

Subject: [gps-talkusers] New York City and mass transit

Hey listers,

I'm going into NYC and seeing a Metallica concert on Long Island next
week. I was planning to take the Long Island railroad from Penn
Station, but from where I am, it's a lot cheaper to come into NYC via
grand central. What's the easiest way to get from Grand Central to
Penn? I don't believe there's a direct subway , is there? How long a
walk is it?

Also, the last time I tried to use Sense Nav in NYC, it took me about
half an hour to get a fix. Is there anything that can be done about
this? I know the BrailleNote GPS has an urban canyon mode, but
SenseNav does not. Am I really missing out on a lot by getting
SenseNav instead of the BN GPS?

Thanks in advance.

Eric
