in this situation it is because some of the porting might not be in a normal
configuration in this equipment. I'm hoping that it is either circuit board
design, or maybe an engineer trying to conserve battery life. The only
other reason that I said that was because these devices are directed to our
community.

Hello, Gerry,
Why do you say that blind people get ripped again? Please be a little
more specific. I agree that it appears that blind people get ripped
sometimes, but if you are talking about that omission of power to the USB
port, it was probably that they did not want anyone powering external
stuff, then complaining that the battery crapped out too soon. Perhaps
the makers did not realize that the buyers should have been plainly warned
before finding out the hard way.
I sort of take issue with the short life of the battery on the Earthmate.
Even if it is not connected, it goes flat within a week, and gives up
after a couple hours when it is in operation.

Hello, Jim,
The end of the cable that fits into the computer USB connector is standard
for all USB ports. The other end, the one that fits into the Earthmate is
specific to Earthmate, so you should ask DeLorme for one. No reason why
they should not send you one right away. One advantage to the USB
connection is that you do not use the Earthmate battery pack, the unit is
powered by the USB cable. Be aware and beware that I have heard that some
of those BN-PKs have USB ports that do not have the capability of
supplying power. They were made non-standard or just mis-designed for
some reason. When USB ports began to be used on computers, one advantage
advertised was that they could supply power to small gadgets, like digital
cameras, webcams, and the like. The Earthmate was designed so that it
could be USB-powered. Go figure.

Where is the best place to get a usb cable for the earthmate?
I would like to hook mine up to a computer and use it with other software
too and need the usb cable since I got mine from sendero I did not get a
usb
cable just a serial.
I would imagine if I went through the manufacture I would of got a usb in
stead of a serial:).
Anyway I'm rambling. If anyone know of the type of usb I need to get and
where I am all ears.
Thanks.
