Chris,

There may be tinted windows on some or all of a window on a bus as well. 
Also, some buses have fiberglass roofs and the GPS signal will come 
straight through that so you don't even have to put the receiver near the 
window.

Another trick is to sit on the left side of the bus in the US or on the 
right side in the UK so you are in better view of the sky. In this you are 
closer to the middle of the street and even those few feet can help in 
acquiring satellites.
