Scott,
Although you can look at the file date for the POI files, this doesn't
represent when they were last updated.
There is a distinction between points of interest and maps. These are
completely separate databases licensed from separate companies. The data
quality varies from place to place so it is difficult to generalize
nationwide about the dates of the data.
The version 3 map data will be current through the first quarter of 2004
and the POI data will range roughly from 2001 through 2003. Our ultimate
goal is to link into an on-line database of POIs but such a thing won't
happen for a while. We have added phone number and address data to the
version 3 POIs. I notice that the PublicGIS.com website is no longer
available. We'll keep working on a more dynamic POI solution.
Like Rich said, it would also be great to have a link from a POI to the
business. I think particularly of linking to a restaurant's menu. Lots of
medium to high-end restaurants have their menus on-line now and more and
more people are getting data services on their cell phones.
