[gps-talkusers] Re: Abbreviations in gps

I agree that abbreviations could be used on the braille display, but I would still like the words to be spoken in full. This makes place names clearer. I think m on the braille display would not be confusing for meters. That's already the braille short sign for meters anyway. It could be displayed with a letter-sign if necessary but maybe keysoft takes care of that automatically. As far as doctor and drive or street and saint, does it depend whether the word has a full stop following it as to whether speech speaks the abbreviation correctly? I've just run them through the braillenote and get viariable results. If st has a fullstop after it it is spoken as street but saint without one whenusing space with g. dr is spoken as doctor both times. If I put the cursor on the word st is spoken as saint both times. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kate Stephens" <katestep@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Subject: [gps-talkusers] Abbreviations in gps

Hello All,
I'd like to make a suggestion that some of the information in the gps could be abbreviated so that more can fit on the Braille display--particularly for
those using the PK and 18 cell Braille displays.
The main offender is "metres". Personally I think this should be shortened
to "m". However, if people think that is confusing, maybe it could be "me"
in the same way that "mi" is used for miles in imperial mode.
Other things that could be shortened are "Street" to "st." "drive" to "DR".
So that these things are pronounced correctly, the Keysoft pronunciation
dictionary could be altered to reflect these changes.
I notice that "st" already reads as "street" and "dr" reads as "drive". The
alternative to me would be that "st." Would be Saint" and "dr." Would be
"doctor".
Something for us to ponder.
Kate
