[goodfeel] FAQ: How can I use a MIDI Controllers or MIDI Keyboard with Lime and Lime Aloud?

Q. How can I use a MIDI Controllers or MIDI Keyboard with Lime and Lime
Aloud?

A. These days, MIDI musical keyboards are usually connected directly to a
PC with a USB cable. No MIDI cables are required, just a standard USB
cable. Generally, before you make that physical connection, you need to
install software drivers for your particular make and model of keyboard
which interpret the MIDI information that flows back and forth between your
keyboard and your PC. You should find these drivers on an installation CD
that came with your keyboard or by searching for them using Google or any
good search engine. For example, let's say you own a Korg M-1 synthesizer.
Go to the search box on google.com and enter:
Korg,m-1,driver
In the search box and choose the search button.

Once the drivers are installed, Lime will display them in its MIDI Input and
MIDI Output dialogs so that Lime can communicate with the software drivers
for your keyboard.

For older keyboards which do not have USB ports built-in, you must acquire a
piece of hardware called a USB MIDI interface. We sell one called the
MIDISPORT 2X2. It is a small, rectangular box that has on one side a USB
port for connecting your PC to it using a standard USB cable. On the other
side of this small box, there are MIDI ports. You physically connect
standard MIDI cables to the MIDI ports built into your MIDI keyboard.
Keyboard MIDI-Out goes to MIDISPORT MIDI-IN and vice versa. Again, you must
install the software drivers for the MIDISPORT before physically connecting
the unit to your PC and to your keyboard. Once drivers installed and
physical connections made, Lime displays the drivers as choices under its
MIDI Input and MIDI Output dialogs. MIDI Input shortcut keys are ALT+H, I.
And MIDI Output is ALT+H, O. BTW, if you need a new MIDI keyboard or
controller, we can supply a number of makes and models. Go to
www.DancingDots.com and choose "Products" and, from the Products Page,
choose "Musical Keyboards and Music Hardware". That page also has an entry
for the MIDISPORT.
