i'm sitting back for this discussion, but i must say that i like this
particular idea. my host doesn't support any of the defined surround
formats (yet), but it does support arbitrary n-channel i/o
configurations. having plugins being able to do the same seems like a
good idea, and this seems like a nice way to express it.

i take it that this is orthogonal to the buffer format presented to
the plugin, right?
