At that level, ordering doesn't matter - the streams are not interleaved (we
have agreed on this, right?).  Withing a format definition, the streams are
named.  Order matters not.

I don't see any use in this at all - these are tricks to make various bits of
hardware or various installations easier.  Virtual wires are ALL oxygen-free
and cost 0 dollars per foot. :)

As I've advocated before - if you need to read some encoding, by all means,
do.  Just convert it to a standard N-channel format.
