[gmpi] Re: NAMM follow-up, some major decisions to make

personally, I see NO direct/immediate commercial interest in GMPI.

I know I'd have a hard time convincing the marketing side to support it. I'd find it interesting if it allowed me to do what I can't do with VSTi's. But again, you'd have to fight a lot for the marketing side to get some interest in anything but the standard VSTi's. I know that they will get some interest as long as there will be at least hundreds of existing good plugins for it.

And yes I can understand that some big brand names don't want to be associated with Steinberg's standard.
But a plugin standard centered around Cubase or MIDI is about the same to me.

To me that 'simplification', 'market fragmentation' really doesn't matter for marketing guys. You can imagine the best plugin system you want, it's not what matters to sell plugins.

What we need is some compelling business reason for companies to want to
do this today. Is there something truly broken that GMPI will fix?

Well, no nothing's broken. I can happily Jam on my VST Plugins all day. The *vast* majority of musicians using VST or AU have no complaints.

I see the advantage of GMPI being a huge simplification of the plugin development process. The commercial benefits:
-less market fragmentation (all plugins run in most hosts)
-more plugins
-cheaper/better plugins (more developer hours devoted to innovation, less to compatibilty/porting).

To be honest, GMPI's advantages lie in the long term. I'm not surprised commercial companies see no immediate advantage.

P.S. Regarding MIDI/OSC...Don't start debating this again. For better or worse the requirements are complete. It's taken long enough. Re-debating them will only kill the process, let's move on to the next step.
