I said then, and I stand by it now:

If a plugin processes MIDI *but*not* audio, I could live with providing
MIDI input directly.  My biggest fear is that if we provide MIDI inputs,
then synths will use that and ignore GMPI.

Providing MIDI-in for MIDI-processor plugins is very clean to me, and
could even make the case for cutting some of the cruft from the main
proposal. :)
