You may notice that Steinberg and Digidesign are conspicuously absent from this discussion. Both companies have stated either directly or indirectly that they need to "own" the plugin API. They believe they stand to benefit from not participating. Maybe the MMA hasn't really done something this ambitious before. It's been responsible for promoting, enhancing and updating the MIDI spec these 20 years. In the meantime it was also responsible for standardizing DLS, which maybe or maybe isn't a good thing in your opinion. > > The process we set out last year was to have a public requirements > > phase, followed by a members-only implementation phase, followed by a > > public approval/revision phase, followed by a members-only ratification. > > With all due respect, this sounds like a "yes" answer to my original > question. Except for the publc approval part. Suppose for a second that no one on this list helps to write the spec (unlikely). But assume it anyway. Then the private goes off and implements something different, then comes back to this list with their results. If we went wrong, then what happens is there is public *disapproval* and the implementors get spanked. > > Yes, the implementation is a private effort.
