mike, i think this is short-sighted.

take the simple case of a parameter that defines the path to the
sample file being used by the plugin. the plugin loads it from its
default state. how does the host find out the name of the file?

if the inputs can be of variable type, so can the outputs, and so
control signals (by which i assume you mean scalar values, or low
frequency vectors) can't represent all the possibilities.
