"Give developers the freedom to use either MAS, DX or TDM. There's
bound to be situations where two formats will co-exist to provide
backward compatibility, whatever".

What is the difference?

I'm not here to help create another pseudo-standard that still leaves
the door wide open for "sorry, you can't use that plugin in this
host". It doesn't matter to me if only 1% of developers actually take
up this possibility: an infrequently enforced but bad law is still a
bad law; in just the same way, an infrequently used bad aspect of an
API is still a bad aspect of an API.

I am being honest and genuine when I say that I really *would* like to
see a robust justification for situations where anything but a single
type per platform is needed. Flexibility is good, but there is some
flexibility that is simply redundant given other information. I
believe this to be the case here, and although I can't say I'd love to
be proven wrong, I welcome the chance to see the error of my ways :)
