16-channels + mixing all in one object is what MIDI specifies.  It may
be ugly, but it's widely adopted.  If we want GMPI to succeed then we
want all those hardware synth vendors to create many many ugly
multitimbral GMPI plugins...

No, Existing plugin standards have flaws.  We don't have to reproduce
them.
