I think in AU, they are handled seperate from parameters, the obvious reason
being that Property "parameter list" can not itself be a parameter.  They
should be pretty similar otherwise,  the same datatypes (float, int, string
etc), they should also be accessible from the custom GUI (well, any relevant
to the end user).

Agree, If the custom GUI needs to change the configuration, it changes the
relevant property. (no cause for "out-of-band communication with custom GUIs
").

In AU (I think I like AU) each parameter has an integer ID, but they don't
have to be contiguous.  The plugin writer has freedom to leave 'gaps' in the
parameter ID's for future expansion whatever. ( You don't have to, but the
option is there).
  From a programing perspective, this gives you the option to store the
parameters in either a map or in a vector (array), so you can trade off
flexabliliy vs speed.
