[glug-t] meeting minutes

                          Meeting minutes
30th July 2003
This is the minutes of the meeting held on 20th July 2003 at "SASTRA" campus
in "TIFAC CORE" conference hall.
This meeting started on the dot;at 9:45 am.The fresh Sunday morning ,LCD
projector ,GNU/Linux system ,marker boards and a near capacity auditorium added
to the excitement of the newbies present.
Vijaykumar began by explaining the beginners ,who outnumbered the amateurs and
veterans on seminal topics which included the advent of GNU project, freedoms
offered by the GNU/GPL license ,Free Vs Non-free software and how free software
was far far superior to the Non free ones.

The larger part of the meeting would follow starting with the presentation
titled "Introduction to Python".Muthu talked about the Python programming
language ,using the Impress presentation as an aid.Starting with how python was
a OOP,easy to learn/use language that came with a lot of add ons and
plug-ins.Then he went off to show a few examples and steps involved in making a
friendly program with python.
Again there were doubts expressed over the maturity and ability of python as a
*programming* language .Contesting and countering the
claim that python was just another programming language ,arguments lasted
long, but then I doubt if it drove a point home.
The introduction was over for some, and over at last, for many.

Then we had the "Power of EMACS" unleashed by VijayKumar. He started with the
various terminology that he would be using in
emacs, after rolling out the history of emacs.Everything else was just put in
place as we watched the demo.Emacs was used to browse files
indent programs, syntax highlight it,browse through the code, search header
files,auto complete the function names,spell check the text,play music,browse
the WWW,read mail, news and what not! It seemed that only Movies couldn't be
played with EMACS.Vijaykumar used a neat presentation on the EMACS terminology
as an aid to guide the audience during the talk.We even had a few sample songs
played from EMACS front end to mpg123.Then the usual questions session was there
to top it all on EMACS.Vijay's only regret was that there was no VI fanatic to
argue.
May be another war averted we thought.

An interesting occasion ,this meeting completed 1 year of this group's
existence. We celebrated with patting our own backs for a job
well done ,and recollected how the first meeting was ,and the days when the
group grew up.Congrats to all.

Mr Suresh prabhu spoke about the launching of the translation of a few HOW TO's
to Tamil and making a user friendly guide in Tamil for the tamils.People were
requested to contribute as it required very less knowledge of GNU/Linux.

And what more ,the last minutes of the meeting were spent discussing the topics
for the next meeting and sorting out a few issues.
Deepak barua from SASTRA promised to handle the "Tools for SYS Admins" in
GNU/Linux and SASTRA sysadmin Mr Balaji promised to continue
the topic "Super clusters in GNU/Linux" platform.

 Thats all Folks.
Cheers
Muthu
