Please tell us how much harddisk space do u have. If
you have low ram, it can be compensated by having a
big swap space, may be of 256Mb, but the system will
be toooo slow for you to work. and even if u install
X, that will take ages to start, given that u have 386
as well!!

The RAM is the memory space where the programs on ur
harddisk are brought in to be executed. a basic linux
kernel will take up 1Mb of ur RAM. That leaves 3Mb of
space.
- your shell is one program that will run through out
ur login session. use shells with small footprints
like ash. avoid bash, that will use a lot of your
memory
- by default, a lot of daemons(background processes)
will start up. edit the necessary /etc/rc.*S dir and
trim out the unnecessary daemons. if u are using
REDHAT, use the 'ntsysv' program to choose the damons
which should be started during boot time
- try compiling the linux kernel and make its
footprint small as well, but do compile it in some
other machine!! eliminate as many features as
possible, line SCAI support and Irda support and so on
... reatin only those features, which your hardware
needs.

a good advice: buy some more RAM and make the system
at least of 64Mb. DDR(double data rate) RAM, the
fastest available in the market will cost u 1400Rs for
128 Mb.

about which distribution to use, u may use DebIan or
Redhat. remember, when u r installing the distro, DO
NOT install any extra packages in the first time.
check out any default packages, mainly in case of
Redhat. Install only the base system first. that is,
only the required utilities needed to run a GNU/Linux
system. later on, depending on ur need, install the
required packages.

good luck,
anand saha.
