[glug-t] Sunday 18th May Meeting,Minutes

Fellow Members!!
What a pleasure to meet the GLUG-T, indeed.
The meeting on the 18th of May was attended by 8 people.
The summer holidays we thought were the deterrent this time.
However there were equally hot topics to watch out for.

They were
          (i) networking tools for GNU/Linux
          (ii)GNU philosophy
and the GNU/Linux certifications by the company at the hosting venue
that never happened for the second time.

Mr.Balaji started with the proverbial ISO's OSI 7 layered networking
model. After explaining all the 7 layers and their functions he moved
on to the more custom 4 layered model defined for networking.
Soon after laying the basics of laying the information we started off
with "ping" tool.He explained all the basics of "ping" , the ICMP protocol
that it worked on.Also pointing the "fping" that worked on host names fetched
from files. He also talked about the DHCP protocol & its uses in configuring
thesystems in
a real
environment ,and the dial-up service.

The next part of this topic was on the routers & management tools.
There were discussions on traceroute, xtraceroute, ethereal and various SNMP
tools
available on GNU/Linux.Mr.Balaji gathering from his experience as an
administrator vouched for the usability and efficiency of the
GNU/Linux tools over other proprietary tools when it came to
Networking and expressed his personal preference for the GNU/Linux
OS over them for this reason also. The discussion ended with the talk on

The next topic was VijayKumar's "GNU Philosophy".Vijay
elaborated on the 4 different freedoms that were guaranteed by the
"GNU GPL" license. He also made sure that the ethical aspect of
software was to "help your neighbour" and build a society that shares
it wealth and works at improving the technology to make life
better.Vijay pointed out the analogy that RMS had often used in his
speeches.It was
comparing
software to recipes.
People share their recipes. We can use it, add our own changes and if
we wish give it away.Same Vijay argued applies for software also. There
was the importance of the GPL as the messiah and the protector of the free
software's
right,
extolled by Vijay. We were explained how the GPL
prevented non-free software being written using free-software.The
classic example of the free software "X windows" ,without a GPL
license of its own ,was used by SUN MICRO-SYSTEMS to make proprietary
desktop.The
discussion
closed with the talk on GNU-LGPL and its necessity during the
earlier times and sometimes even now.

Later the meeting was occupied by thoughts for the next meeting topics
and venues. It was decided to hold the meeting at SASTRA University , Tanjore.
Mr.Balaji , said that SASTRA will be offering the GLUG-T a static IP address.
The meeting drew to a close at 12:45 pm on the 18th of May.
Regards
Muthu &Vijay
