[glug-t] Pengufest: What shall we put into the distro(s)?

Hi,
This thread shall deal with what content to add into the distro. Let
us not concentrate on the distro but the applications, desktops, etc.

Please reply directly to mails from this thread, so that the subject
line is automatically set correctly.

Here is what I think should be in the base.
GNOME and KDE desktops. It should not be a problem if we are using a
DVD to distribute. But I think we may need a CD version; in that case
we can chuck KDE being less popular one.

Please keep in mind that the initial target audience consists of:
College students! (UG, PG and beyond)

Applications
-------------------

Development:
Compilers: Everthing.
IDE: One per important language (c/c++, java, python, .net, perl
should do i guess)
Editors: All the stars (emacs, vim, gedit), maybe even kedit, pico, nano, etc.

Office Document Stuff: Open Office (optionally the low weight ones too
like abiword)

Multimedia:
Support for open codecs only. C'mon, then we can make our distro official!

Games: Lots of good Linux based ones (tuxracer, solarwolf, frozen bubbles, etc)

Engineering and Scientific Software: Looking at the repos, there is a
lot unexplored (and possibly buggy) software lies there. I think we
should try to include a lot this.

Web: Browsers, and .... Web servers, FTP servers/clients, etc.

Typesetting software: Tex system, latex and some associated editors too.

Starting firing now, the ball is now in your court.
