I never said Novell gains nothing. Novell gains from all the work it has done. 
But the free software model allows others to gain from that work as well.

Debian concentrates more on creating infrastructure, than on sugar coating. For 
example the simple installation of Knoppix with hardware detection was made 
possible by Debian's discovery tool. The excellent package 
management/installation system was one of Debian's key innovations.

Btw, the Debian project has now turned its attention to the installer, we will 
soon have a better installer...
