[glug-t] Minutes of July meeting

Date : 29-7-04
Venue : A-13 Hall,NIT(REC)-Trichy

Author : Allagappan.M

The first meeting for the '04 Academic year took place in A-13 hall,
NIT-Trichy.

Me and muthu were there around 4:45PM, arranging the LCD projector.
Manik brought his laptop.Unfortunately the LCD projector failed to
work(It didnt get the video signal!) and the meeting was delayed by
15 minutes.We started of with a self introduction.Nearly 45 students
turned up with a majority of newbies.

The meeting started as the assembled people introduced themselves.
Manik started off with a introduction to GNU/Linux and its philosophy.
He explained about the concept of free software, its benefits and gave
a few interesting examples. He talked about the freedoms, origin of
GNU/Linux
and the free software movement,GPL and the security features of
GNU/Linux.
We planned to have a faq section at the end. But,the people started off
asking questions in between, for which manik answered one by one.The
whole GNU philosophy was explained within half an hour.

Next was Satish's presentation on the applications and editors in
GNU/Linux.
We tried connecting the LCD with Sooraj's laptop, but it LCD didn't
work.
Then, vicky came up with another LCD projector, which helped us to
continue
the presentation.Satish was cool.He went on explaining about the
various
applications in GNU/Linux like ooimpress,oowrite,etc...His
presentation took
about 20 mins.

When Bala(IIyr ECE (Newbie!)) started explaining the use of GNU/Linux
in
octagon with a presentation, there was a power fluctuation and the LCD
projector was switched off! Bala took manik laptop in his hand(?!)
and
he taught the newbies how to connect to the remote server(Silver
server)
using Exceed and VNC server. He explained how to transfer files from
the
windows server and our Silver server using ftp and from Silver to
Aditya
(Windows server) using the samba access. The presentation also
included
the screenshots of various applications like anjuta, emacs. There was a
short tutorial about how to write a c program and compile it in Anjuta
IDE.

Finally, there was a FAQ section. Many newbies asked questions which
were
answered by those on the stage and those who were seated.Manik told
them
how to join the group and about the glug-t website.

Eventhough the program went well, many first years felt uncomfortable
as
the meeting proceeded with all technical terms which they didn't
under-
stand. The first years told that they didn't understand what was going
on
as the whole concept was new.But there were a few exceptions.Few
first
years asked pretty cool doubts.A first year, Kasturirangan, gave the
members a CD with a game called 'ENTROPY' designed by him and his
friends.
He told us that he would give the source, if the company he was going
to
sell the game, allowed him to do so.

The meeting ended at 7:30PM.
