Many of you have heard us say, "Volume Drives Value." This is a
simple but powerful concept: the more developers there are on the
network, the more compelling devices and services they create, the
broader the market opportunity for Sun's network innovations -
hardware, software and services.

Today's announcement is another step in putting those words into
action - driving down the barriers for developers, for device
manufacturers, and for the delivery of yet to be conceived new
innovations that, in turn, create greater business opportunity for
Sun and our partners. What we're announcing today will grow Sun's
business and value.

WHAT IS HAPPENING:

On Monday, November 13, Sun will announce the open sourcing of Java
technology. By releasing all of the key Java implementations - Java
Standard Edition (traditionally run on desktops), Java Micro Edition
(traditionally run on phones and embedded devices) and Java
Enterprise Edition (traditionally run in business infrastructure) -
using the Free Software Foundation's GNU General Public License
(GPLv2), the license at the center of the GNU/Linux community - we
are reaching out to new developers. Frankly, we are reaching out to a
community of developers that historically viewed Sun as an outsider.

With this move, we are no longer an outsider, we are the world's
largest contributor to both the free software and GPL communities. We
are now the free software movement's most significant benefactor. And
as we move ahead and you communicate with customers, partners and
across the blogosphere, please make sure they all know.

And make sure they know why this is good for our business: the more
developers, devices and new services on the internet - the more
demand there is for the network innovation Sun sells to the marketplace.

HOW IT DRIVES MORE BUSINESS FOR SUN:

- By open sourcing Java, we drive down the barriers to adopting the
most innovative platform the internet's ever seen, one that connects
people, and devices, to the network.

- The lower we drive the barrier to adopt the Java platform, the more
Java developers and devices we create on a global basis - inspiring
Brazilians, Indians, Chinese, Russians, Africans, Americans -
everyone, to freely build the products that best characterize local
opportunity, leveraging the best global technology.

- From new set tops to mobile devices, new network infrastructure to
business services, we expect this action to drive more developers and
devices. These developers and devices create more market opportunity
for Sun's network innovations.

- We aim to be the leading supplier of the infrastructure that powers
the network. Sun's products and services enable the littlest to the
biggest enterprises, in private and public sectors, from startups to
today's leaders, to deliver network services to their consumers -
with better reliability and security than with any alternative.

KEY BACKGROUND - FREE AND OPEN SOURCE AS A KEY STRATEGY:

We have stated that we intend to opensource all of our software - no
product or group excepted - and we're on track to steadily do so.
With OpenSolaris, Netbeans, OpenOffice, GlassFish, Looking Glass and
many other contributions, we have made available to developers some
of the most advanced technologies on the planet.

The result? We've fostered large and vibrant developer communities,
we've added choice and diversity to the network. And we've driven
awareness and demand for Sun's products and services. It's never a
strict lock - that's not how open markets work - but we've created
opportunity for Sun and our partners.

With all that said, the open sourcing of Java technology is unique -
in that the Java ecosystem is the world's largest developer
ecosystem. Java runs on more devices, and in more applications, than
Windows, Linux and Solaris combined. It's worth repeating, more
applications and devices use Java today than the total number of
devices running Windows, Linux and Solaris - combined.

As we said to the Wall Street Journal last week, "5 years from now,
this [move to free Java] will be seen as the single most important
technical shift ever to have occurred on the internet."

The goal of the Open Source Java Project is to grow the Java
developer community, accelerate Java platform development and to
extend the Java platform throughout all free and open source
developer communities - stimulating innovation and creating new
business opportunities. The more developers working with Sun-created
IP, and devices that deliver it to a worldwide audience, the greater
the market opportunity for Sun's network innovations - hardware,
software and service.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE OPENSOURCE JAVA:

Open sourcing Java is a bold move that's good for our business, our
customers and the community. Here's why:

- Volume Drives Value. By open sourcing Java, Sun drives down the
barriers to adoption of the most innovative platform the Internet has
ever seen

- Sun becomes the leading contributor to the opensource movement. By
using the Free Software Foundation's GPL license, we are amplifying
the Linux community's efforts, and stepping in to support them in a
time of need. This firmly positions Sun as a friend to the open
source movement, and as its single biggest benefactor. No one can
dispute that.

- We will continue to offer commercial products and services, with
full indemnity for our customers. This act refutes the recently
introduced idea that open source isn't safe, or that customers owe
Microsoft a royalty for using free software. That's now clearly
debunked.

- Open sourcing Java meets the requirements of a growing set of
customers who require open source, such as governments and universities.

- Open sourcing Java gives all developers, not simply those involved
in the Java Community Process, the freedom to participate in the
future of Java.

- Open sourcing Java - with a license common to linux and it's
worldwide supporters and distributors - will dramatically enhance the
adoption of the technology.

Today's accomplishment is the result of the dedication and vision of
the Java community and developers worldwide. It is also the result
of an extraordinary level of focus, passion and energy by those at
Sun who have been involved in Java through the years and all of those
who will make today's announcement an ongoing success. The outcome
will be the continuation of a vibrant, diverse developer community -
resulting in more innovation, more diversity, and more market
opportunity for Sun and those aligned with free and open markets.
