welcome to glug-t.

you can configure your modem and connect to internet using kppp. It is a 
KDE application. It is user-friendly.

If you dont have KDE at all in your machine, I recommend wvdial. please 
search in your installation CD-ROM or download from web. you may have to 
write the config file yourself. Please refer to 
http://freshmeat.net/projects/wvdial

I am writing all these things considering that you have an external 
modem supported by Linux.
