You can edit GIF images with the GIMP. I believe the decompression algorith=
m is not patented. So you can read the LZW compressed GIF files, but when y=
ou save the GIF image, the image will not be LZW compressed.=20

BTW, the patent on the LZW compression algorithm has expired in the US. But=
 Unisys(the patent holder) claims that the patent is still valid in some Eu=
ropean countries and Japan.
