I met some of the [ex-]GLUG-T volunteers (Algappan, Hari, Shagan and
Rams) last saturday. Heard that GLUG-T is gearing up for a free
software event. Alagappan wanted me to share with him experiences from
previous events. Here are few of them:
1. Make sure you handle money properly. Make a log of how much money
is being pooled in and how much is being expended. This place is where
previous events have faltered.
2. Make sure that your speakers use Free Software for their
presentations. Let your speakers know about it advance. I have been to
some events where the "cheif guest" ends up giving a presentation
using M$ Office. Such incidents can convey a wrong message to your
audience.
3. Alagappan was keen to know why we didn't accept sponsors for our
previous events. We usually try to raise funds for the event by
ourselves, we do not depend upon sponsorship. Not many companies share
our views about software freedom. Would you accept a sponsorship from
Microsoft? Well the other proprietary companies are no better. Don't
let them use your event to peddle their proprietary software
business. It also conveys a wrong message to the audience.
4. Make sure your contests have something do with Free Software/Free
Software Movement. Don't turn it into a CSE Symposium. For each
contest, ask yourself, "Does it promote Free Software in any way?"
Regards,
Vijay
