[glug-t] Re: FOSS in trichy

Hi,
I'm an old-timer on this group and a very silent one at that. So hope these
comments help a bit.

>May be we could ask one of them to come up and talk about their experience
>>with free softwares in their office
I think that is one of the single most intelligent ideas I have seen on this
group. And I shall explain my reasons.

First, no one can doubt that all here are either GNU/linux evangelists or
budding ones. However, that does not solve anything.

1. There is a significant difference between regular GNU/linux hackers and the
common user. This means that your endorsement of this wonderful product means
nothing to other common users. In fact, they might just be more afraid at a
glimpse of your vast knowledge in the field. So if a person who is like them
gives a well rounded endorsement of it, and calms their technological fears,
then that will be far more effective than any evangelism from the hackers.

2. It gives you an opportunity to find out what the end user of a GNU/Linux
enterprise system feels about it. The key here is enterprise. Why? Because
enterprises can single-handedly change the popularity of a product and it's
life. Imagine a company with about 40,000 employees (not a very large number in
many cases), where there is a corporate rule to use a set of Microsoft products
for seamless integration of the work. Also imagine that the corporate rule was
changed to GNU/Linux and it's suite of software. It means that 40,000 people
suddenly have to use what you have been shouting yourself hoarse for god knows
how long. And what if those 40,000 people do not like it or find it
uncomfortable for their work? I think you know.
So indirectly, these guys matter. Simple evangelism cannot help because they
are not making the decisions.

3. The govt still carries a tremendous stamp. If you can show the people that
even the govt has faith in it, people will believe you just because the govt
does.

Hopes this puts into perspective what you can gain out of this person chatting
with you and others. Hope you guys get him and have fun quizzing him :)

.

What say for the next glug meet we should invite any one from there ? and we
can even offer any technical assistance if needed ,we have such a good
technical talent available in the campus .
